LA CONDENADA

2021 Artuke

Grapes Palomino, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano
Colour Red
Origin Spain, Rioja
ABV 14%

The 2020 vintage of La Condenada was the first Rioja red to achieve a score of 100 points in this report. And guess what? Brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel have done it again. Made with a field blend from a 0.75-hectare parcel planted in 1920 and rescued from abandonment under a decade ago, this is a poised, balanced, effortlessly nuanced wine of great intensity. Wild herb and hot stone aromas are a portal to a palate of earthly delights, with plum, blackberry and orange zest flavours and remarkable palate length. One of the world's greatest reds. Rescued from neglect – hence its name, The Condemned – this is a traditional field blend from a high vineyard plot planted in 1920. It was bought by the brothers in 2012 as they could not resist the ancient bush-vines here producing such fantastic fruit. The field is planted with old Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and some Cagazal or Calagraño vines, an obscure variety which resembles Palomino Fino. They want to maintain the style of viticulture that was traditionally done in the area so Arturo and Kike are gradually buying small abandoned plots next to La Condenada that used to be part of the vineyard. I still have vivid memories of my visit to La Condenada: such a very singular parcel of bush vines planted in 1920, each individual characters, each of them survivors. The vineyard and wine are a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and white Calagraño. Fermentation is in 600-litre oak and careful ageing leads to a pure fresh wine with tannins for elegant ageing. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032 Rating: 97 Sarah Jane Evans MW (Apr 2024)

The 2021 Artuke La Condenada is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Graciano, Garnacha, and Palomino sourced from Baños de Ebro in Rioja Alavesa. Aged for up to 12 months in French oak barrels, this purple wine unveils balsamic aromas accompanied by black fruit tones and a subtle oak influence. On the palate, it showcases a dry, lean and bold character, with a compact and refreshing texture that lingers with pronounced black fruit notes. This wine represents an intense and primary expression of Rioja, capturing the essence of its place and embracing the terroir-driven trend in the region. Artuke

These wines from Rioja are rooted firmly in their terroir. Artuke is all about small scale, biodynamic production: twenty two hectares of vines spread over thirty two plots between the stunning, hilly villages of Baños de Ebro and Abalos on the upper terrace of the river Ebro in La Rioja Alta, Northern Spain. Artuke is run by the family of Miguel Blanco, who have been working the land in this Northern part of Rioja Alavesa for over a century. Now, the helm is taken by Miguel's two sons Arturo and Kike de Miguel which as you might guess, is where the name 'Artuke' is derived from. The aim of the brothers has been this: To create a new and individual wine which still respects the history of the wine region and of their family wine tradition. The result: A thoroughly modern style of Rioja, but not heavily extracted or heavily wooded in style.
