"Precision" is what Arturo de Miguel is looking for in this wine and that's exactly what he has delivered. Showing the freshness of its 600-metre site in Ábalos, this is a little more closed than the other 2021 Artuke reds. Very lightly wooded, it's another wonderful expression of place, with damson and blueberry fruit, racy acidity and detailed, layered tannins. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 97 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Feb 2024)

There are just over 1000 bottles of this made from the small high altitude plot planted in 1950 on clay-chalky soils in Ábalos. Formerly known as K4 this is the same blend of Tempranillo (85%) and Graciano (15%).L&S (Sept 2023)

Crafted from grapes harvested at optimal ripeness during a pristine vintage, the 2021 El Escolladero comprises 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano sourced from Ábalos, Rioja Alta. Aged for up to 12 months in French foudres, it reveals a deep purple hue and a reductive balsamic nose accented by blackberry, violet and grapefruit notes. On the palate, it offers a dry, juicy and chalky texture. Refreshing acidity and fine-grained tannins lead to a lingering finish—primary and intensely fruity. This wine epitomizes the new Rioja style, focusing on terroir-driven expressions from specific vineyard sites. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 96-100 Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous.com (Dec 2023)

Artuke

These wines from Rioja are rooted firmly in their terroir. Artuke is all about small scale, biodynamic production: twenty two hectares of vines spread over thirty two plots between the stunning, hilly villages of Baños de Ebro and Abalos on the upper terrace of the river Ebro in La Rioja Alta, Northern Spain. Artuke is run by the family of Miguel Blanco, who have been working the land in this Northern part of Rioja Alavesa for over a century. Now, the helm is taken by Miguel's two sons Arturo and Kike de Miguel which as you might guess, is where the name 'Artuke' is derived from. The aim of the brothers has been this: To create a new and individual wine which still respects the history of the wine region and of their family wine tradition. The result: A thoroughly modern style of Rioja, but not heavily extracted or heavily wooded in style.
